III. Setting up the Nodon Friends of Hue

Now we need to add this switch to our Philips Hue eco-system. To do this, we go to the Hue application, Accessories Configuration, and ask to add a “Nodon Smart Switch for Hue”.

The assistant then tells us to press the top left button for 10s.

The Nodon Friends of Hue is then detected. The top right and bottom left buttons must then be pressed simultaneously. The switch is added! You can give it a name, and assign it one or more rooms to control (up to 3). Note that it is also possible to have it control a specific device (or several), or an area, and not only a room.

By default, the button on the left will be used to turn on (up) and off (down) the associated lighting. The button on the right will be used to vary the intensity. But it is possible to modify the assignments: the two buttons can control different rooms (or zones or devices), to switch them on, dim them, or launch a specific scene. In my case, I wanted the left button to control the bedroom ceiling light, and the right one the Hue Go lamp on the bedside table. You can also assign actions when you keep each button pressed: here they will be used simply to vary the intensity.

To resume: the left button is used to switch the ceiling light on (up) and off (down). If I keep pressed up, I increase the light, if I keep pressed down, I reduce it. The right button will control the bedside table lamp: up / down to turn on and off, press and hold to increase or decrease the brightness.

We'll just regret not being able to do a “toggle”, this action that reverses the current state: if the lamp is on and you press it, it turns it off, and vice versa. So it would have been possible to control up to 4 rooms or devices ;-) But then, being able to control two different devices or groups of devices is already very practical.

IV. Conclusion

I've been waiting a long time for Philips Hue-compatible square format switches (other than Niko or Vimar for example, very nice but expensive and sometimes hard to find). In a very short time, here I am with the “official” Philips Hue Smart Button, and this new Nodon switch.

This new format made by Nodon is interesting to keep a classic aesthetic, with two buttons. Its wireless and battery-free technology is a real plus, as it can be placed anywhere (on a wall, but also on a piece of furniture, a worktop, etc.). On the other hand, it will be a little less discreet, since in order to function and create the little energy it needs, a small “clack” is heard at each action. The use in a bedroom may not be ideal, even if the noise remains very reasonable (as we have seen, I put it up in our bedroom).

I only regret one thing: not to find the management by time slot as on the Smart Button: several time slots over the day, with a different operating mode (lighting in standby mode from 11pm to 6am for example, normal operation the rest of the day).

Apart from this detail, this switch does the job perfectly! And all this for a price that also remains very reasonable :) Test validated, I only have to order a second one for the smallest room (this format will avoid that they lose the little magnetic button :p
